What was your favorite type of book when you were a kid? It was most likely an adventure novel.

Adventure books allow children to explore imaginary worlds, meet new people and creatures, and take on daring quests—all from their own homes. Not only do these books open up a world of imagination for young readers, but they also have a profound effect on how children see themselves and their strengths in the real world.

A good adventure story has the power to move us to a world we would never otherwise explore. We become invested in the characters and the things that matter to them. We visit places we would never normally choose to go and sometimes discover a hidden sense of adventure within ourselves.

Even if we didn’t intend to, we’re caught up in the story and learning as we go along. Perhaps we learn something about the operation of a hang glider, the sounds of a storm, or what it would be like to awaken under the stars on a vast, rolling ocean. And perhaps, when we close the book, we walk into our own backyard and view it with a bit more awe. It’s no surprise why adventure books have been popular among young readers for centuries. These stories provide hours of entertainment and foster important life skills like courage and resilience while inspiring kids to get off the couch and explore the world around them.

So, if you’re looking for ways to get your little one excited about trying new things while developing important life skills along the way, look no further.

Here are some tips for digging into an adventure book with your child:

  • When reading aloud to your child(ren), leave time to discuss what you’ve just read.
  • When they have questions, investigate further. Keep an eye out for the tidbits of the story that piqued their interest and learn more about them in another book or on the Internet.
  • When reading, there is not always time to delve deeper. (If you’re reading before bed, conducting additional research could make getting to sleep very difficult!) In such instances, make a mental (or actual) note and revisit the topic at a more appropriate time.
  • Consider questions that will assist your child in imagining what it would be like to be a character in the story.
  • Permit your child to create an alternate ending or chapter for the book. Discuss alternative paths the plot could have taken.
